The recent train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, US, has been understandably concerning for those living in the area. The train was carrying combustible materials and in order to prevent a possible explosion, the chemicals had to be released & burned. In a case study on epidemics that didn’t happen, we learn more about Nipah virus. Nipah virus is an emerging zoonotic disease that causes fever, headache, vomiting, and brain inflammation. It has a case fatality rate of up to 75%. In 2021, a 12 year old boy was infected with Nipah virus in Kerala, India. Sadly, the boy lost his life, but Indian health authorities responded quickly and aggressively to prevent an outbreak. You can read more about their response here.
