I knew that early introduction of peanuts reduced the likelihood that allergy would develop, but I did not know about the "oral tolerance" theory! Fascinating!

So peanuts have to be invited in the front door, like vampires? 😂

I have wondered why the recommendation changed so much from when my kids were born (‘06 - ‘09, thankfully none have peanut allergies). Thanks for this deep dive into the LEAP study.

Would a "LEAP" approach also work for other common allergies, such as poison oak? Poison Oak, Toxicodendron diversilobum, causes a terrible allergic reaction when touched. Native peoples in the Americas were known to drink a tea or eat the fresh spring growth to develop a tolerance. Mango skins have a similar chemical compound.

Great question! I consulted Dr. Pugh-Bernard, and she said: There are clinical trials underway looking at the same approach for other food, but not for non-food allergens (that I know of). Interesting idea though! At this time (to my knowledge), they do not advise the same approach with other allergens/goods. They want to collect and analyze the evidence first.
