This fundamental breach of basic public health 101 has deeply troubled me since I first heard about it.

As an infectious diseases specialist who has devoted a professional lifetime to helping and preventing diseases afflicting individuals and communities, I genuinely felt physically nauseated when I saw Edwards smugly claiming he was just doing what any other doctor would do, as though he was some altruistic martyr helping others despite great inconvenience to himself.

Doctors like him should have their license to practice revoked at a minimum, and it would be great if he had his pants sued off him for medical negligence by one of the people he attended to during the maximally infectious phase of this dangerous illness. I can’t believe he would have insurance cover for the eventuality of deliberately exposing people to a potentially fatal illness, but since this is the US, one must expect anything is possible.
