Combatting the spread of norovirus, lizards losing their tails, & we have a database!
Welcome to The Dose! We’re delivering bi-weekly health and science updates right to your inbox, and we’re including some humor, art, and fun along the way. If you haven’t already subscribed, we’d love to have you!
Has the stomach “bug” or stomach “flu” hit your household/office/dorm? You’re not alone! Norovirus is a highly contagious group of viruses that cause GI issues, such as vomiting and diarrhea. While you’re probably familiar with norovirus, you may not be so familiar with the fact that hand sanitizers do not work to combat the spread. You can read more here.
Weight A Minute… Have you listened to our most recent episode of the pod? We’re tackling BMI and obesity with Dr. Spencer Nadolsky, a board certified obesity and lipid specialist physician.
Another perfect example of “The Dose Makes The Poison”. Candles have been vilified on social media lately; taking the blame for everything from infertility to hormonal issues. But you can relax, rejoice, and perhaps light a candle, because there’s no quality or reliable evidence behind these claims! Read more here.
If you have a sensitive stomach, you might want to pass on this. But if not, take a few minutes to watch this video and read the accompanying article from Science Magazine, to learn how lizards can detach from their tails to escape danger. Fascinating!
Did you know we have a database? We always cite our sources for infographics and podcast episodes, but it can sometimes be tedious to track something down from an older post or episode. Thanks to our database, you can find what you’re looking for in an instant! Enter keywords or phrases, or even select specific categories, and you’ll have access to all the sources we’ve posted on a particular topic.
Forget about raccoons and bears. If you live in the suburbs of Sydney, Australia, you’ll need to worry about cockatoos breaking into your trashcans! These intelligent birds have learned how to get into cans and toss trash into the street, as they search for food. They’ve even outsmarted some of the homemade deterrents that residents set up. Once one bird learned, the others followed suit through social learning.
That’s it for this issue of The Dose! If you’re not already subscribing, we’d love to have you! If you are, we’d love it if you’d share this with your friends, family, & colleagues!
