No, Fauci did not flip-flop on natural immunity
Please stop listening to every video clip circulated online without context.
Let’s talk about the video of Dr. Anthony Fauci on C-SPAN regarding the flu. This clip is being widely circulated by political organizations and opponents to vaccinations as ‘evidence’ that natural immunity to COVID-19 is superior. Most of them do not even cite the source, nor provide any context. We were able to track the full-length video down so we can break this down for you all. But briefly, this video was cherry-picked, taken completely out of context, and is being used to draw false equivalencies and manipulate the public.
The roughly 30 second video clip being circulated was taken from an hour-long C-SPAN broadcast with Dr. Fauci on October 11, 2004, right at the beginning of the 2004-2005 influenza season. This broadcast was nearly an hour long, and covered a broad array of topics related to influenza. The clip in question was him responding to a viewer’s question at the end of the broadcast.
The supposed “gotcha” this video is insinuating is that Dr. Fauci states that if someone had the flu for 14 days, they no longer needed the flu vaccine, as that illness provides protection against the flu. Those circulating this video are extrapolating this to COVID-19 (and presumably other illnesses), but fail to address any of the following:
