First Complete Sequence of the Human Genome
The Human Genome Project set out to map the human genome on October 1, 1990 and completed its endeavor in 2003. The team sequenced 99% of the euchromatic genome and estimated that there were around 20,500 genes. In March of 2022, a team of researchers from the Telomere-to-telomere consortium published the world’s first gapless sequence of the human genome. It may seem confusing to hear that the complete human genome was published twice. Let’s discuss why this achievement is so significant.
