So sad for the loss of your beautiful boy, Scuppers. The life of a dog is never long enough. Why, oh why can’t they live as long as humans? One thing for sure is that everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong. ❤️

What a lovely tribute to your dogs and a metaphor for life. They are the great equalizers and bring strangers together in a way that nothing else can. You are right, we don't deserve them, but they love us unconditionally anyway. Keep writing and bringing light and truth to the surface. We need your voice more than ever.

Thank you for writing this beautiful Ode. It made me laugh and cry. I’m sure Scuppers was so happy you and your husband chose him. I’m very sorry for your loss and the grief you must feel. I too have loved and lost dogs I cherished. Currently, I have 2 foster “fails” and one other rescue (along with 2 rescue cats). Dogs are the most amazing beings!

Jess, my wife and I know all too well what you are feeling right now. In our 31 years of marriage, we have had five cats, each one a unique individual who made a real difference in our lives. We know, better than I can express in words, that however much we open our hearts to the love of an animal, the return to us is much, much larger. Through you, your husband, your children, and the other members of his pack, Scuppers will continue to transform the world.

Beautifully, perfectly written, and I'm so sorry. Love to you and your entire pack as you navigate life with the hole that sweet Scuppers has left. You did good, buddy.

Made me cry. 😭 We put our 13 year old pit to sleep in June. He helped raise our kids and several other dogs. After that we swore no more puppies, but of course, we were only fooling ourselves. Now we have Quinn, 5 months old pit mix, and my life is whole again.

Hugs! My brother always says that a dog will bring you the best days of your life but also one of the very worst ones when it passes.

I'm 74 so I've had some great dogs and now cats. I've also had to cope with the loss of several best friends. Jess, my condolences. With the exception of my wife and my stepdaughter, both animal people, I'd rather spend my time with the four leggeds.

I sometimes think our dogs have short lives in order to leave us more time to love more of them. If there is a heaven you will definitely be ambushed by furry friends when you arrive.
